Over 21 Million of these cars were built between 1938 and 2003. Yes, 2003. Although sales in the US stopped in the late 70's and German production ended a few years later- the car continued to be built in other countries including Brazil and Mexico. They are incredibly durable and simple. Note the little hose attached to the spare tire- that provides pressure for the windshield washer fluid! I owned one of these about 12 years ago and thought I had done great selling it for twice what I paid ($3,000). That was then- before they really reached the collector status they have today. I paid a lot more for this one- but wanted to put one in the garage before they went even higher. There is a ton of history associated with the beetle, and yes it starts in pre WWII Germany. They got popular again when the "New" beetle came out in 1998, built through 2019. Soon to come- an electric version of the VW microbus. Hippy's rejoice!
