1980 MGB

Behold the 1980 MGB

I bought this car because I thought I should own one. No other reason. They are not rare- as they were sold from 1962 all the way up to 1980. They were actually still selling well at the end of production- but the company thought it was stealing sales away from the new and very modern looking (be that late 1970's) looking TR-7, so they killed the MGB. Then a year later they killed the TR-7 and MG's in America. The MG's were the cars soldiers wanted to bring back from being in Europe- fast, fun, and small British sports cars. Really- one of the very first sports cars of any kind. They were definitely not built to last 45 years- as this one has. Very light weight and just under $8,000 in 1980- that's about $33,000 today. This one is the Special Edition... it has Paint Stripes that make it go way fast, and a few bobs and bits that were unique as a send off to the car. There is fun that can only come in older, simple, and light weight cars like this because you can't build anything like them anymore. Mostly because they are easy to die in if you get into any kind of accident. The biggest safety feature today is that it stands out- so more likely to be seen and avoided. This car wasn't as good as the seller claimed on the auction site I purchased it on- and that is unfortunately usually the case in my experience. I'll probably spend the 25/26 winter putting it through my paces to bring our the best it can be- which is usually pretty good.Take a look around the windshield... something you probably have never seen on a car before :) Fun fact- when the US changed its bumper height requirement,  MG did not have the desire to redesign the car so they put the big rubber front end on and raised the car an inch. Not the prettiest solution- but people still loved em.
